The liquid is drawn from the tank, pumped through the chiller and back to the tank. In industrial water chillers is the use of water cooling instead of air cooling. In this case the condenser does not cool the hot refrigerant with ambient air, but uses water that is cooled by a cooling tower. Given the annual temperature range in this area, the savings were readily apparent. Whenever the outside air temperature falls below 70 °F, the return chilled glycol solution is automatically diverted through the integrated Free Cooling coils of the chiller. These coils are located across the inlet-air side of the air-cooled condensers and use the condenser fans to pre-cool the return glycol. As the ambient temperature falls, the pre-cooling increases – until at approximately 20 °F below the supply glycol temperature – the chiller operates entirely without compressors. This 460 volt unit is in above average condition, with coils in great shape, a 15 hp Trane 3D Scroll Compressor, and a brazed plate heat exchanger. The model number of this chiller is their “10” series, we were told by TC because it is set up to go to lower temps – specifically it has a setpoint range of 10°F to 65°F.
